Argan Oil for Beauty – 7 Tips for Getting the Best Quality and Quantity

By | About Argan Oil, Argan Oil, Argan Oil Research, Berber Women, Fair Trade Cooperatives, Natural Beauty | No Comments

Over the last few years, Argan Oil from Morocco has emerged as one of the best natural beauty secrets. A New York Times article called the oil made from the nuts of the argan tree “liquid gold” and went on to say that it “has become one of the latest miracle ingredients in the beauty industry. High in vitamin E and essential fatty acids, it is believed to help all sorts of skin conditions: dry skin, acne, psoriasis, eczema, wrinkles.”

At first, argan oil was hard to find since Argan trees are indigenous to Morocco however recently it has exploded into the marketplace and you’ll see brands, big and small, use it in their formulations.

Many companies name their products “argan oil” but how much actual argan oil is in the product? Is it enough quality and quantity to reap the benefits?

The best quality argan oil is 100% pure, organic, raw, cold-pressed and preserved in a dark bottle. When heat is used to press the oil, the essential fatty acids, nutrients and vitamins in argan oil are compromised and you don’t reap all the benefits. Read labels carefully.

When shopping online and in stores, use these seven tips to help you find the best quality argan oil for your beauty needs.

1) Is it 100% Pure Argan Oil? You want your argan oil to be pure. There are sellers that cut it by adding cheaper oils into what they call “argan oil.” It must be from a reliable source and be 100% pure and fresh. Larger companies that order huge amounts of argan oil ship by sea and may take months to arrive in the US. Smaller artisanal companies have the ability to ship by air so the argan oil is fresh.

2) Look at the placement of Argan Oil on the ingredient list. After reading the front of the label, go to the Ingredient List to see where Argan Oil is placed. If you want 100% Pure Argan Oil, it should be listed first as Argania Spinosa. On labels, ingredients are listed in order of highest concentration to lowest so the first one to three ingredients will be the bulk of the formulation. If argan oil is listed as the fourth, fifth or sixth ingredient, you’re getting very little of the actual oil.

If the first ingredients are water, alcohol, or toxic silicones and preservatives that is the majority of what you’re putting on your body.

3) Does it have a USDA or ECOCERT organic certification? Since the beauty industry isn’t regulated on the wording of “organic” and “natural,” it’s easy for the company to misrepresent the terms. It’s only organic if the label has the certifying agency’s seal and the argan oil is bought from a certified organic supplier. Morocco uses a French organic certifying agency and it will be labeled “ECOCERT.”

4) Is it Cold-Pressed? If the oil is not cold-pressed, much of the nutrients are destroyed in the heating process. Large companies adding argan oil to their formulations (selling millions of products) might not be cold-pressing the oil. Using heat will produce more oil but at the expense of the nutrients.

5) Look to see if it’s deodorized. Argan oil has a natural nutty scent. Some companies deodorize their argan oil to eliminate the aroma. Again, this process destroys some of the vital nutrients in the oil. Buy oil that is raw, virgin and unprocessed.

6) Is the oil made in fair-trade women’s cooperatives? In 2002, the Moroccan government helped the local Berber women, who’ve been making argan oil in the traditional way for centuries (see them in this CNN video), to organize cooperatives. It’s important for these women to earn a fare wage and be treated well. Find companies that source their oil from fair-trade co-ops where the women reap the benefits from their arduous labor.

7) Does it come in a dark bottle? Oil can go bad quickly when it’s stored in a clear bottle and even Amber bottles don’t preserve the oil in the best way. The shelf life of your oil depends on the bottle so buy argan oil that comes in a dark bottle. These bottles don’t allow ultra-violet rays to penetrate the oil and allow it go rancid. Glass is always better and it’s recyclable.

Argan oil is a luxurious, multi-use oil that absorbs quickly into your skin. It hydrates, protects and rejuvenates the face, body, hair, nails and much more. If you buy it wisely, you’ll reap loads of benefits.

No More Dirty Looks Review: Zweena Argan Eye Serum and Argan Rose Hair Elixir!

By | About Argan Oil, Argan Rose Lustrous Hair Elixir, Argan Rose Rejuvenating Serum, Argan Ultra-Nourish Eye Serum, Berber Women, Natural Hair Care, Reviews | No Comments

We are thrilled that Nicolle Mackinnon over at the No More Dirty Looks shared her love for Zweena’s Argan Eye Serum and Zweena Argan Rose Hair Elixir! A while ago, founder Alexandra Spunt reviewed our Argan Rose Rejuvenating Face Serum and wrote “it feels amazing, and the smell makes me happy!” No More Dirty Looks is so well-respected in the green beauty arena so we’re delighted they’ve embraced Zweena. Below is Nicolle’s review!

When it comes to beauty products that makes it on my “buy again” list, the background story of the brand is sometimes as much of a factor as the scent, the way it works and its effectiveness. Zweena Body Care is one of those brands—founder Jayme Barrett met and fell in love with her now husband on a trip to Morocco, where she also discovered the power of argan oil (which you know NMDLers love). Together, they’ve worked with fair-trade Moroccan co-ops and Berber women to bring that argan oil to the United States. Cute, right?

  1. Argan Rose Lustrous Hair Elixir: If I had to pick a favorite, it would be this haircare powerhouse. Like I said, I can’t resist anything that smells like roses (and I love treatments for my tresses), so it was easy to convince me to test out this hair oil. What I’ve come to love about it is its multipurpose nature. With cold-pressed argan oil, meadowfoam seed oil, sweet almond oil and avocado oil, the Hair Elixir has come in handy as my already-dry hair has battled against the Minnesota winter. I use it most frequently as a leave-in treatment on my damp hair—one pump distributed on my ends helps keep fuzziness away and moisturizes the driest part of my hair. But it also works great as an overnight deep conditioning treatment, which I do once a week, and have seen a noticeable difference in my hair’s softness and shine. Plus, you guys, it makes me so happy to inhale that rose scent. It’s like hair perfume and it lightly sticks around all day.
  2. Argan Ultra-Nourish Eye Serum: I have to say it took me a while to get around to trying this one, not because I wasn’t excited about it, but because I’ve been too in love with my ED4OLO Eye Balm to test anything else. But then I got this persistent, dry, flaking, itchy patch of skin on my eyelid that none of my products could touch. On a whim, I rolled on this silky eye serum as a last-ditch effort. Nearly overnight, the irritated flakiness disappeared. I still don’t believe it because I’d had the dryness for so long. I credit the argan oil and the marula oil in Zweena’s formulation, both of which have crazy healing properties and are natural fighters of harsh, dry weather conditions (I think -20 degrees counts are harsh, right?). Camellia oil, which softens skin, and baobab oil, which promotes wound healing, swooped in for the assist as well. Now I’ve got my husband (who kind of hates any oil as a moisturizer) using this serum on his under eyes. That’s what I’d call a win.
Thanks so much Nicolle and glad they’ve made it into your daily beauty routine!! You can find Nicolle on Instagram here!

Berber Women Still Making Argan Oil in the Traditional Way

By | Argan Oil, Berber Women, Fair Trade Cooperatives, Skin Care Products, Travels to Morocco | One Comment

Berber women in Morocco have been making argan oil for centuries in the same traditional way. They crack the argan nuts that fall from the argan tree to get to the argan kernels. Then they grind and cold-press the argan kernels in this type of stone grinder for the culinary argan oil. Cosmetic grade argan oil is ground in a semi-mechanical cold-pressing machine. Zweena Pure Argan Oil is bought directly from a women’s fair-trade co-op in Morocco that we visit regularly. Even today, the women make it the same way.

They explained that this process preserves the “integrity” of the oil.

No heated machines. All organic and cold-pressed.

Commercial manufacturers of argan oil use heated machines which destroy a lot of the healing properties and nutrients. Cheap argan oil is usually processed with heat and is less effective in moisturizing, softening, protecting and healing the skin, hair and body. It is bought in huge drums and it’s difficult to know how long ago the oil was pressed. Commercial operations typically ship their oil by sea and may take months to arrive. Zweena buys our argan oil in small quantities as soon as it’s pressed and we have it shipped priority air, arriving in 1-2 weeks. It’s super fresh!

At Zweena Body Care, we believe that positive energy and thoughts can be sent and received. As you may know, we buy our organic Argan Oil direct from women’s cooperatives in Morocco. The Berber women are grateful and happy to be hand-cracking the argan nuts and their energy is transmitted to us. On breaks, they sing and play the drums which energizes the oil even more.

Our argan oil is not machine-made; it’s handmade with love.

At Zweena Body Care we take great care in storing, blending and bottling our elixirs within a peaceful environment.

With strong positive intentions, we hand-blend and bottle our Pure Argan Oil and Argan Rose Rejuvenating Serum accompanied by spiritual, uplifting music. We end with the special prayer that states, “May all persons who use Zweena Argan Beauty Elixirs enjoy healthy, beautiful, glowing skin, hair and bodies!” Mother Nature gave us the Argan tree which in turn gives us the argan nut and oil.

Enjoy our beauty elixirs that are brimming with nature’s healing nutrients and positive energy!
