Argan Oil for Beauty – 7 Tips for Getting the Best Quality and Quantity

By | About Argan Oil, Argan Oil, Argan Oil Research, Berber Women, Fair Trade Cooperatives, Natural Beauty | No Comments

Over the last few years, Argan Oil from Morocco has emerged as one of the best natural beauty secrets. A New York Times article called the oil made from the nuts of the argan tree “liquid gold” and went on to say that it “has become one of the latest miracle ingredients in the beauty industry. High in vitamin E and essential fatty acids, it is believed to help all sorts of skin conditions: dry skin, acne, psoriasis, eczema, wrinkles.”

At first, argan oil was hard to find since Argan trees are indigenous to Morocco however recently it has exploded into the marketplace and you’ll see brands, big and small, use it in their formulations.

Many companies name their products “argan oil” but how much actual argan oil is in the product? Is it enough quality and quantity to reap the benefits?

The best quality argan oil is 100% pure, organic, raw, cold-pressed and preserved in a dark bottle. When heat is used to press the oil, the essential fatty acids, nutrients and vitamins in argan oil are compromised and you don’t reap all the benefits. Read labels carefully.

When shopping online and in stores, use these seven tips to help you find the best quality argan oil for your beauty needs.

1) Is it 100% Pure Argan Oil? You want your argan oil to be pure. There are sellers that cut it by adding cheaper oils into what they call “argan oil.” It must be from a reliable source and be 100% pure and fresh. Larger companies that order huge amounts of argan oil ship by sea and may take months to arrive in the US. Smaller artisanal companies have the ability to ship by air so the argan oil is fresh.

2) Look at the placement of Argan Oil on the ingredient list. After reading the front of the label, go to the Ingredient List to see where Argan Oil is placed. If you want 100% Pure Argan Oil, it should be listed first as Argania Spinosa. On labels, ingredients are listed in order of highest concentration to lowest so the first one to three ingredients will be the bulk of the formulation. If argan oil is listed as the fourth, fifth or sixth ingredient, you’re getting very little of the actual oil.

If the first ingredients are water, alcohol, or toxic silicones and preservatives that is the majority of what you’re putting on your body.

3) Does it have a USDA or ECOCERT organic certification? Since the beauty industry isn’t regulated on the wording of “organic” and “natural,” it’s easy for the company to misrepresent the terms. It’s only organic if the label has the certifying agency’s seal and the argan oil is bought from a certified organic supplier. Morocco uses a French organic certifying agency and it will be labeled “ECOCERT.”

4) Is it Cold-Pressed? If the oil is not cold-pressed, much of the nutrients are destroyed in the heating process. Large companies adding argan oil to their formulations (selling millions of products) might not be cold-pressing the oil. Using heat will produce more oil but at the expense of the nutrients.

5) Look to see if it’s deodorized. Argan oil has a natural nutty scent. Some companies deodorize their argan oil to eliminate the aroma. Again, this process destroys some of the vital nutrients in the oil. Buy oil that is raw, virgin and unprocessed.

6) Is the oil made in fair-trade women’s cooperatives? In 2002, the Moroccan government helped the local Berber women, who’ve been making argan oil in the traditional way for centuries (see them in this CNN video), to organize cooperatives. It’s important for these women to earn a fare wage and be treated well. Find companies that source their oil from fair-trade co-ops where the women reap the benefits from their arduous labor.

7) Does it come in a dark bottle? Oil can go bad quickly when it’s stored in a clear bottle and even Amber bottles don’t preserve the oil in the best way. The shelf life of your oil depends on the bottle so buy argan oil that comes in a dark bottle. These bottles don’t allow ultra-violet rays to penetrate the oil and allow it go rancid. Glass is always better and it’s recyclable.

Argan oil is a luxurious, multi-use oil that absorbs quickly into your skin. It hydrates, protects and rejuvenates the face, body, hair, nails and much more. If you buy it wisely, you’ll reap loads of benefits.

Berber Women Still Making Argan Oil in the Traditional Way

By | Argan Oil, Berber Women, Fair Trade Cooperatives, Skin Care Products, Travels to Morocco | One Comment

Berber women in Morocco have been making argan oil for centuries in the same traditional way. They crack the argan nuts that fall from the argan tree to get to the argan kernels. Then they grind and cold-press the argan kernels in this type of stone grinder for the culinary argan oil. Cosmetic grade argan oil is ground in a semi-mechanical cold-pressing machine. Zweena Pure Argan Oil is bought directly from a women’s fair-trade co-op in Morocco that we visit regularly. Even today, the women make it the same way.

They explained that this process preserves the “integrity” of the oil.

No heated machines. All organic and cold-pressed.

Commercial manufacturers of argan oil use heated machines which destroy a lot of the healing properties and nutrients. Cheap argan oil is usually processed with heat and is less effective in moisturizing, softening, protecting and healing the skin, hair and body. It is bought in huge drums and it’s difficult to know how long ago the oil was pressed. Commercial operations typically ship their oil by sea and may take months to arrive. Zweena buys our argan oil in small quantities as soon as it’s pressed and we have it shipped priority air, arriving in 1-2 weeks. It’s super fresh!

Zweena Argan Rose Face Serum is a Beauty Must-Have for “No More Dirty Looks!”

Green beauty expert, Alexandra Spunt, co-author and founder of the book and web site “No More Dirty Looks” included Zweena’s Argan Rose Rejuvenating Serum in her Winter Beauty Must-Haves! Read her lovely review below…

“You know how it goes. The temperature drops, the wind picks up, and all of a sudden you’re wishing you’d spent a little more time hydrating over the summer—and a little less time with a cocktail in your hand. Ah, winter. Even us Cali girls go through a version of it—not as bone-chillingly cold as the wet winters out east, but arid air does its own special damage. Anyone else feeling winter skin woes?

Alas, the only thing any of us can do is hydrate! Which is why I’m excited about this new product I’ve been using lately that help keep moisture in my skin.

Zweena Argan Rose Rejuvenating Face Serum

What happens when you take ethically sourced argan oil, a known favorite of ours, and add stress-busting rose? Zweena, that’s what! An awesome new line that I had the pleasure of discovering recently. Jayme Barrett, the company’s co-founder is a smart and lovely lady who discovered argan oil (and found her husband!) on a trip to Morocco. It’s a great story. A fellow author, she also wrote the popular book Feng Shui Your Life, and when we met she promised she’d contribute a piece to NMDL on the subject! (I don’t know about you guys, but I’m woefully ignorant about the Feng Shui. But this is the year I learn.) I’ve only tried the Argan Rose Rejuvenating Serum myself, and whether or not it’s really diminishing my wrinkles—rosehip seed oil is a popular anti-aging natural—it feels amazing, and the smell makes me happy. I like using it on my face, and keep it at work to give me little rose-scented pick-me-ups during the day. I also like putting a little on my split ends.”

At Zweena Body Care we take great care in storing, blending and bottling our elixirs within a peaceful environment.

Review of Argan Rose Serum by Beauty Huile

By | Argan Rose Rejuvenating Serum, Press, Reviews, Skin Care Products | No Comments

Thanks to Nav Mundi, beauty oil expert and founder of BeautyHuile for her glowing review!

What is it: Only the most luscious Rose based Argan face serum ($58) to hit the senses and sink in speedily. Another Rose? No, not quite. Rather, enjoy the demure whiff of a memorably Moroccan Rose, which enthralls with its sweet tenderness that never ceases to end. Jarring at first, it never skews towards a screech in its unfold from what may have been the plushiest imaginable petals. Fully refined through and through. No other essence comes in betwixt your skin and the gentle touch of femininity of thiszweena* Rose.

Why it matters: Only a handful of Argan serums have earned the coveted USDA approval, which means the oil is pretty much good to eat. Skin food as some say, the eye-opening serum is a hearty cocktail of Argan (to rejuvenate), Rosehip (to promote cell turnover), Evening Primrose (to improve skin’s structure) and Pomegranate Seed (to improve tone) carriers. EcoCert is happy with the organically sourced oils (founder and author Jayme Barrett met with 15 co-ops before settling on the one that produced this Argan), so you should be, too. See instant results overnight with just a few drops of this lightly viscous serum, which when left overnight leaves skin buttery soft.

Why it impresses: Moroccan Rose. I was going to wax poetic about the merits of sourcing Argan from those famed fair trade co-ops, but some cool hunters beat me to the punch. Steam distilled from fresh petals and used since the 1600s for its incomparable effects to moisturize and soothe, Rosa Damascena is popularly known to treat fine lines, scarring, mottling and even…sexual frigidity? Um, I’ll take history’s word for this last one. I quite like using a dense Rose serum after steaming the pores open, exfoliating the week’s grime out of my pores and washing off a great mud mask. A well-done rose oil invariably freshens the new glow and ensures optimal moisture levels. This is important as we head into dry season and the chronic overuse of heaters.

The Final Word: A congenially delightful face serum to dovetail into anyone’s choice of night creams.

*Zweena, you ask? It means ‘beautiful’ in Morocco.

Feng Shui expert Jayme Barrett and her husband launch an exotic line of beauty elixirs inspired by Morocco

From coolhunting.com

Harnessing the healing powers of organic argan oil from Morocco, Jayme Barrett—author of “Feng Shui Your Life”—finds inspiration in surrounding herself with beautiful things. In her work as a Feng Shui consultant, she transforms spaces to create positive energy in people’s homes and lives. Together with her husband, Zouhir Yakoubi, Barrett is now launching Zweena, a line of argan beauty elixers bringing the wisdom and practices of Feng Shui to the body.

“Argan oil was one of the first gifts I gave to my wife and she fell in love with it,” says Yakoubi. “That was our first inspiration. We feel proud to bring argan oil, which is referred to in Morocco as ‘liquid gold’, to the US. It’s been our miraculous beauty secret for centuries. We chose the argan cooperative where we buy our oil very carefully. It’s pure, organic, first cold-pressed and of the highest quality.”
